The United States continues to lag other countries in the percentage of women in the national legislatures.  The US currently ranks 71st among countries of the world according to the
Inter-Parliamentary Union.
In January 1997, when the Inter-Parliamentary Union first began reporting the rankings, the US ranked 41st.  Only 16.8% of the members of the US Congress
are women: 17 women senators and 73 of the 435 representatives in the US House are women.  The global average is 18.3% women in national legislatures.
