Micheline Calmy-Rey becomes President of Switzerland - January 1, 2007 - Micheline Calmy-Rey becomes the second female president of Switzerland. The first was Ruth Dreifuss in 1999.  The president of Switzerland is elected by the Federal Assembly and serves for one year.  One remarkable aspect of women becoming president in Switzerland is that women did not get the universal right to vote in all parts of Switzerland until 1971.  There are now twelve women who are either president or prime minister.
